Cooking More and Moving Less

Like I was saying the other day, I really haven't felt like cooking lately-- I've just wanted to eat out ALL THE TIME!

But, because I'm a poor nutritionist who is going on a cruise next month, I have been cooking a lot more. Beans, lentils, chickpeas, farro, Brussel sprouts... I have just been working away in the kitchen. I really do like to cook! I just have to be in the mood for it in order to make it into the kitchen.

So, this week I made my way to Dekalb Farmers Market. Have you been there? It is located in Decatur, Georgia, and it is one of my FAVORITE places to go in Atlanta. For some reason, I have this weird love of grocery shopping. My refrigerator is packed! Good feeling, until I think about having to cook all the food (and then I want to make a beeline to the pizza joint down the road).

I really do think I have broken my ankle. It is still swollen, and I can't believe how much I miss playing trying to play tennis, and going on walks. I haven't even bothered wearing my Fitbit because of the sadness that would overwhelm me at the end of the day... I also have some bulging discs in my back, and limping around has irritated those. I think my 28 year old body is falling apart :).

What I Believe... Right Now!

People get so frustrated by nutritionists and RDs because of our ever-changing views on what is right and what is wrong. You have one nutritionist tell you to eat high fat, and another one will say to eat low carb. So, I am going to tell you what I feel is right (at this moment in time). This is what I try to live by, but this is only me. I also feel that every individual needs something different, and it is extremely important to listen to your body and intuition!

What I Try to Eat

Diet Rich in:
  • Whole Foods
  • Healthy Fats (nuts, avocado, seeds, etc.)
  • Nutrients and Phytochemicals (get the "most bang for your buck")
  • Plant-based foods

Diet Low in:
  • Sugars
  • Heavily Processed items
  • Trans fats

I also think exercise is very important, especially for bone health and cardiovascular health, but you can't out-exercise a bad diet!

I am actually vegetarian, and have been for about 1 1/2 years now. My lipid profile was getting out of control, and after becoming vegetarian my triglycerides and cholesterol levels dropped significantly. But that doesn't mean I feel that everyone should be vegetarian. I think meat is fine in moderation, just like most things.

I have always disliked the fact that people think vegetarians are supposed to be skinny. Body shaming in general bothers me. I could sit and eat chocolate cake and fries and milkshakes all day and still be vegetarian, but that wouldn't be what my body craved, and I would gain weight. It is actually really hard to eat vegetarian at a restaurant without eating tons of carby/sugary foods!

It is also possible to starve yourself and be fat. Nutrients are extremely important, and eating tons of high calorie, low nutrient dense foods is what is making America sick, fat, and unhealthy. We are literally starving our bodies of the nutrients we need while becoming obese and diseased.

How I Got Here

My name is Chastity. I am a 28 year old woman living in the Atlanta metro area.


I have struggled with my weight since I was a young girl. I tried Slim-Fast, Weight-Watchers, and many other diets which never worked because they were not sustainable. I have taken Phentermine. I have really mistreated my body-- a body which has done nothing wrong to me.

So you may be thinking, "Another fat girl with a blog." But here is something a little different about me:

I am a nutritionist. 

I graduated with degrees in Dietetics and Consumer Foods from the University of Georgia in 2011. I have been working in community nutrition and public health with the Georgia WIC Program since then. I counsel people on how to live healthfully. I will begin a Dietetic Internship in August so I can sit for my RD exam. I know about nutrition. Knowing about nutrition and being thin are not one in the same.

This blog is going to be centered around my struggles and love addiction with food, my internship, and adoring myself despite my flaws. Expect to hear about other things going on in my life, too. I look forward to begin sharing with you!
